1. get an tar.gz/tar.bz2 or any other archive
2. create a symlink to this archive in a different directory
3. navigate to this directory
4. put cursor on this symlink in mc
5. press F2 and x to extract archive contents

Result:
There is no option to extract the archive after pressing F2 to invoke context menu. It is likely because mc doesn't consider the symlink as an archive.
